About Norway's policy rate

Norges Bank policy rate (styringsrenten), from the BIS policy-rate data set (WS_CBPOL, NO). Current: 4.25% on 17 Sep 2026. Since 1993 this is the sight-deposit rate; the earlier stretch is the overnight lending rate.

The chart is a step at policy changes. From 3 Mar 1986 to 17 Sep 2026 (14,809 observations): mean 4.66%, median 4.00%; low 0.00% (8 May 2020), high 50.00% (7 May 1986). Not a mortgage or deposit rate. This page is not an official BIS publication.

Reading this series

Norway's policy rate, styringsrenten, is set by Norges Bank and is the rate the central bank uses to steer short-term money-market rates. This page uses the BIS central bank policy rate series for Norway (WS_CBPOL), compiled with Norges Bank. Since 1993 the series is the sight-deposit rate; the earlier stretch is the overnight lending rate, which was the policy instrument before that. Changes come only at Norges Bank's policy meetings, so the series is drawn as daily steps.

Read the headline with its as-of date, then the "versus the previous reading" line. Where the rate has been unchanged, the page surfaces the date of the last actual move rather than a run of zero values. Mean, median, low and high are arithmetic summaries of the observations in this build, not official figures. Chart and Table present one series two ways, the range buttons only filter what is drawn, and Explore adds zoom and pan on request. The policy rate is not a mortgage or deposit rate, and this page is not an official BIS publication.

About this desk

The Norway desk leads with Norges Bank's policy rate, styringsrenten, from the BIS central bank policy rate series for Norway, then Sweden, ECB and UK rates. Since 1993 the series is the sight-deposit rate; earlier it is the overnight lending rate. The BIS joins these instruments into one comparable policy measure, drawn as daily steps because the rate changes only at Norges Bank's meetings. It is a policy rate, not a mortgage or deposit rate.

All desks show the same series in a different order, so the figures do not change when you switch. Values are republished with attribution to the BIS, and this page is not an official BIS publication. No Norwegian retail lending or deposit series is ingested, so those pages are absent rather than estimated. Nothing here is financial advice, and readings may lag their source.
