About Japan's policy rate
BIS central-bank policy rate for Japan (WS_CBPOL, JP). Current: 1.00% on Sep 17, 2026. The series follows the instrument the BIS and the Bank of Japan treat as the policy rate in each period — today the uncollateralized overnight call rate. Compiled by the BIS with the Bank of Japan.
The chart is a step at policy changes. From Jan 1, 1946 to Sep 17, 2026 (29,480 observations): mean 3.40%, median 3.65%; low -0.10% (Sep 21, 2016), high 9.00% (Dec 22, 1973). Not a mortgage or deposit rate. This page is not an official BIS publication.

Reading this series
Japan's policy rate here is the BIS central bank policy rate series for Japan (WS_CBPOL), compiled by the Bank for International Settlements with the Bank of Japan. The BIS series follows whichever instrument the authorities treat as the policy rate in each period; today that is the uncollateralised overnight call rate, while older stretches reflect earlier frameworks. It is stored as dated level changes and shown as a daily step series, because policy changes only on Bank of Japan decision dates.
Read the headline with its as-of date, then the "versus the previous reading" line; when the rate has been unchanged the page surfaces the date of the last actual move. Mean, median, low and high are arithmetic summaries of the observations in this build, not official aggregates. Chart and Table show the same series two ways, range buttons filter the drawn window, and Explore loads zoom and pan on request. The BIS rate is a compiled policy measure, not a mortgage or deposit rate, and this page is not an official BIS publication.
About this desk
The United States desk leads with the effective federal funds rate, the market average published by the Federal Reserve and republished here from FRED. Bank Rate, the ECB deposit facility, Australia's cash rate and Canada's overnight rate follow in the menu, with the remaining official series after them. Every desk shows the same series in this build; the desk only changes the order and the wording, so the federal funds page carries the same data whether you arrive from /us/ or the hub. The US desk is also one of the two whose dates are written month-first.
The figures are read from official files and republished without alteration. Fed funds is a market rate set inside the FOMC's target range, not a rate the central bank fixes; the target range itself is not published on this site. Nothing here is advice, and readings may lag their source.
